Purpose of the job

Smart meters are an integral part of one of Britain’s largest infrastructure and technology upgrades, providing Britain with a smart energy system to help the nationreach net zero. Smart Energy GB exists to get as many smart meters in people’s homes and small businesses by creating and delivering demand-generating marketing and communications which are as effective as possible.

The Corporate Communications team plays an integral role in the wider Public Relations department and is key to protecting and enhancing the reputation of smartmeters and the rollout.

Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications, your role is to protect and enhance the reputation of Great Britain’s smart meter rollout among influential national, regional and trade media through reactive media handling and proactive corporate communications.

You will be an astute and experienced media handler – used to dealing with complex and high-profile issues, preparing statements for the media, and communicating with journalists. You will work closely with SEGB’s Corporate Affairs team to build integrated campaigns that protect and promote the reputation of the rollout among stakeholders.

The wider PR department operates a 24/7 press office and strives to create a media environment in which people would consider requesting a smart meter installation.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Deal effectively with high profile and sensitive media enquiries, handling them in a timely and accurate manner. This includes preparing statements and briefing journalists, to help protect and enhance the reputation of the smart meter rollout
  • Establish strong working relationships with a wide range of media – national, regional and trade – to increase their knowledge and advocacy of the rollout
  • Prepare senior SEGB spokespeople for print and broadcast media interviews by drafting briefing documents, leading interview practice, and arranging and attending interviews with them
  • Produce high-quality written work in a timely and relevant way – including press releases, Q&As, and opinion pieces
  • Design, develop and deliver creative communication campaigns that influence the news media debate about smart meters
  • Work with colleagues across the PR team to develop messaging and contribute to the evaluation of campaigns
  • Work closely with the Corporate Affairs team to assist with the delivery of integrated stakeholder-focused campaigns
  • Work with agencies on proactive PR campaigns, ensuring that they are properly briefed and that consolidated and clear feedback is given in a timely manner
  • Work collaboratively with SEGB’s corporate communications agency
  • Build strong relationships with external partners including energy suppliers, BEIS and other third-party stakeholders
  • Provide advice and counsel to SEGB colleagues on media-related matters
  • Monitor traditional and social media to identify stories and commentary that is relevant to SEGB, in order to engage journalists and external stakeholders
  • Monthly media evaluation and reporting may be required
  • Take part in the 24/7 duty press office rota (inc. out of hours), responding quickly and robustly to reactive media requests and opportunities while seeking corrections or clarifications to misleading or inaccurate articles
  • Perform other tasks as requested by the Head of Corporate Communications

Skills, experience and competencies

  • You will have strong experience in corporate communications management in a busy news office environment, combining strong issues and crisis communications management skills with proactive thought leadership experience and skills
  • Strong experience in crafting media statements, messages and Q&As on complex and delicate issues
  • Experience in building strong relationships with journalists, an excellent news sense and an understanding of the working and needs of a range of online, print and broadcast media
  • Experience of briefing and managing senior colleagues ahead of high-profile broadcast interview opportunities
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and quickly grasp complex issues with confidence
  • Experience of delivering PR campaigns through from idea development to delivery and evaluation
  • Team working and an ability to act as external ambassador for Smart Energy GB
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/writing)
  • Appreciation of the objectives and activities of Smart Energy GB
  • Appreciate the diversity of the people and communities of Great Britain and embrace this diversity in your approach to work

Our campaign is one of the most far-reaching of any campaign in the country. We are talking to consumers from all backgrounds, across the whole of Great Britain. Our legal duties mean that we have a particular need to make sure that consumers who are harder to reach or need greater support are not left behind (already an important part of our responsibilities and likely to be an increasing focus over the period leading to 2025).
