Anthony, North West London

Anthony

Anthony likes using his in-home display to monitor energy use. He has always been quite conscious of his energy costs but feels more in control with his smart meter, and finds it more convenient than submitting meter readings. Anthony lives with his wife in a semi-detached house in Kingsbury, North West London.

I hadn't heard about smart meters until my energy supplier called to ask if we wanted one, but I decided to give it a try. We have had ours for about a year now and I keep the in-home display in the hallway where I can see it easily. I enjoy using it to monitor our energy usage and I particularly like that the dial goes from green to red to warn us if we are using more gas or electricity.

It's also easy for me to see when someone is using an appliance that is consuming a lot of energy whereas, in the past, I would have had no idea. I tend to notice when the kids have come home now and I even realised that my son was putting on the electric heater in his bedroom when the heating was already on in the house. You just don’t need that much heating!

We've paid by direct debit for a long time and we still do that in the same way. The cost of our bills has stayed fairly balanced as I am quite frugal and have always kept an eye on our gas and electricity use, and shared our meter readings regularly. That said, everything is much easier now – I don’t have to do meter readings anymore and I like being able to see what we’re using.
