Emma Bramwell in kitchen

Emma loves having accurate bills without needing to take meter readings, and the information she gets from her smart meter has helped her to change her behaviour and spend less on gas and electricity. Emma lives with her husband, two young sons and their dog in a semi-detached house in South East Sheffield.

After my parents had their smart meter installed I was really keen to get one for my own family. I made a request to my supplier and although we had to wait a few months, we had our gas and electricity smart meters installed in the Spring of 2015.

I’ve always hated the idea of estimated bills so in the past I submitted meter readings before my quarterly bills were due. With a smart meter my bills are accurate without me needing to do anything at all, which is great considering our gas meter is outside and the electricity one is hidden away in a dark cupboard!

We keep our in-home display on the coffee table and play around with it from time to time. My favourite feature is the traffic light system, which goes from green, to amber, to red depending on how much gas and electricity we are using. It’s a great tool for getting the kids to see how much power we use when they are all charging their laptops at the same time.

They often notice first when the in-home display has gone from green to orange and I think they find it quite intriguing – unless I’ve asked them to turn their gadgets off.

Having a smart meter has made us all much more aware of our energy usage and having the display in our home has been quite educational. I’ve definitely changed my behaviour and rather than being a bit lazy and putting my washing in the tumble-drier, I always make the effort to put it outside on the line. At the same time, it’s quite reassuring – and sometimes surprising – to see that some devices don’t use much power at all!

We’ve only had one bill since getting the meters installed but I can already see that it was slightly cheaper. I’m looking forward to being able to make comparisons during the winter months when we’ll be using more power.
