Smart Energy GB in Communities Programme

Spreading the word about smart meters

The Smart Energy GB in Communities programme will continue to enable, encourage and support community groups to spread the word about smart meters in 2017.

Smart Energy GB in Communities will engage those who might require additional support to engage with the smart meter rollout, focusing on people over the age of 65 who have no access to the internet. It will include a grant fund and training for charities and groups which can help Smart Energy GB share information about the benefits of smart meters, and how to get them.

Smart Energy GB will continue to work with National Energy Action (NEA) on this programme. In 2016, 439 smart meter champions in 239 organisations were trained and continue to support people in communities around Britain.

Claire Maugham, Director of Policy and Communications at Smart Energy GB, said: “Smart Energy GB has the task of reaching every household in Britain. Through the Smart Energy GB in Communities programme, we will continue to work with trusted, expert organisations across the country to ensure people who may need additional support understand the benefits of smart meters and know how to get one.”

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the voice of the smart meter rollout. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national rollout and how to use their new meters to get their gas and electricity under control. Our national campaign is reaching households and microbusinesses in England, Scotland and Wales. For more information visit our website smartenergyGB.org

About smart meters and the rollout

Smart meters replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They enable accurate bills, near real time information on energy use in pounds and pence, and greater control over the way we buy and use energy. The smart meter rollout is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure.

Almost 7 million smart meters have already been installed in homes and microbusinesses, and between now and 2020 every household in England, Scotland and Wales will be offered one at no additional cost. Contact your energy supplier today about installing your smart meter.
