Smart Energy GB publishes updated paper: Smart energy for all

Smart Energy GB, the national consumer campaign for the smart meter roll-out, has released its consultation paper Smart Energy for All. It will inform Smart Energy GB’s work with individuals and communities who have characteristics that may act as barriers to experiencing the benefits of smart meters.

The consultation is part of Smart Energy GB’s work to make sure no one is left behind in the national roll-out of smart meters. It will help to identify the challenges that could prevent some people from benefitting from a smart meter and will inform the organisation’s national campaign which will reach everyone in Great Britain.

The consultation paper has outlined some of the characteristics that may cause barriers. These include being blind or partially sighted, not speaking English or Welsh proficiently, being off the gas grid, or living in rented accommodation. All organisations or individuals working with audiences who might face particular barriers in relation to smart meters are invited to take part.

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB, said: “Smart Energy GB has a big task ahead, to make sure that everyone in Great Britain can say yes to a smart meter and will understand how to use one to better manage their gas and electricity. We won’t be able to do this without the input of experts to help us design our consumer engagement approach. I hope as many organisations as possible will take part in this consultation.”

Smart Energy for All is published in English and in Welsh. To read the full consultation paper and for information on how to respond please go to www.smartenergygb.org/consultations. The deadline for responses is 5th June 2015.

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the not-for-profit campaign for the national smart meter roll-out. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national roll-out and how to use their new meters to get their gas and electricity under control. Our national campaign has already begun and will reach all households and microbusinesses in England, Scotland and Wales.

About smart meters and the roll-out

Smart meters will replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They will provide consumers with accurate bills, near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, and greater control over their gas and electricity. The smart meter roll-out is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure. Between now and 2020, every home and small business across England, Scotland and Wales will be offered a smart meter by their energy supplier at no extra cost. About 1.4 million smart meters have already been installed. Find out how you can get a smart meter from your energy supplier.
