National smart meter roll-out steps up a gear in Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland, 5th November, 2014: On Wednesday 5th November, the national programme to install smart meters in all 2.4 million households in Scotland between now and 2020 will step up a gear, as the campaign to support the programme in Scotland is launched at an event held by Smart Energy GB, the independent organisation tasked by government with consumer engagement during the smart meter roll-out in Great Britain.

Smart meters will be installed at no additional costs to consumers, and will transform the experience of buying gas and electricity for every household in Scotland. Smart meters show consumers what they are spending day-to-day in pounds and pence, and bring an end to estimated bills. Households with smart prepayment meters will no longer need to pay for energy in person at a local shop. The smart meter programme is one of the largest national infrastructure upgrades in living memory, and will involve every home in the country.

The event will bring together charities, businesses and public sector organisations, all of which have an important role to play in the success of the programme. Working in partnership will be a key aspect to turning the roll-out of smart meters into a genuine mass movement which will inspire the nation.
