National Housing Federation partners with Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB, the voice of Britain’s smart meter rollout, has today announced a partnership with the National Housing Federation (NHF).

The NHF is the voice of affordable housing in England representing over 900 housing associations, covering 2.5 million properties that house more than 5 million tenants. This partnership is part of Smart Energy GB’s national campaign to ensure that everyone across England, Scotland and Wales knows how to get a smart meter and how to use it in their home to bring their energy under control. By supporting housing association staff across the country, it will enable Smart Energy GB to inform and educate tenants about the benefits of smart meters.

Every home will have the opportunity to upgrade to a smart meter, at no additional cost, by 2020.  Smart meters will bring an end to estimated bills and show us how much energy we’re using in near real time and in pounds and pence.  There are particular benefits for prepayment customers, who will no longer have to top up at a shop or pay a premium for this payment method.

As part of this partnership:

•    Housing association staff will have access to free training to share the benefits of smart meters for housing association tenants
•    NHF member housing associations will receive regular communications about the smart meter rollout
•    Information and resources will be available to members on the NHF website

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB said:

“Smart meters have the potential to transform the way that people use their gas and electricity. However, we know that some people, including people living in social housing, may not realise that smart meters are for them and may need extra support to benefit from the rollout. With more than 5 million tenants living in properties run by NHF members, this partnership will play a vital role in making sure tenants can get and make the most out of their smart meter.”

Steve Cole, Policy Leader at NHF, said:

“The National Housing Federation is delighted to be partnering with Smart Energy GB. As the most energy efficient housing sector in England, housing associations have long sought to deliver warm, affordable homes to their tenants. This exciting partnership means that we will be able to support our members as smart meters are rolled out across the country.”

Working in partnership with organisations across Great Britain is at the heart of Smart Energy GB’s approach to reach every home and micro-business with information about how they can get and benefit from having smart meters installed. Whether working with national organisations, supporting small local groups, or partnering with major brands to bring the smart meter experience to life, Smart Energy GB and its partners know that meaningful conversations led by trusted charities, brands and people will be a critically important part of engaging everyone.
