Smart Energy GB and the Carbon Trust publish guide for employers to engage staff with energy saving and smart meters

Smart Energy GB, the voice of the smart meter rollout, and the Carbon Trust have teamed up to produce an employers’ guide to smart meters and energy efficiency at home and at work.

The new, free-to-download guide for employers explains how to design and run an energy efficiency awareness campaign at work, including giving practical advice to employees on how they can benefit from getting a smart meter and saving energy at home.

Everyone in Great Britain can get a smart meter, at no extra cost, from their energy supplier. Smart meters bring an end to estimated bills, and show you exactly how much energy you are using in pounds and pence.

Employers can get involved with Smart Energy GB’s national campaign, alongside this guide, to make employees aware of the opportunity to get a smart meter and save energy at home. Encouraging employees to save energy at home can help relieve financial pressure, help build a more motivated workforce and can also inspire people to save energy in the workplace.

Employers including the NHS, Hilton Hotels and Adnams are already working with staff, helping them to get smart meters as part of the Smart Energy Employer's scheme.

Tom Delay, Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust said: “Good quality measurement is the first step to effective management of energy. Understanding patterns of energy use can help highlight where you can reduce waste and costs, both in the workplace and at home.

“We have worked with Smart Energy GB to put together this new guide, which explains to employers how they can better engage employees with energy saving, as well as the ways to encourage staff to get a smart meter and take control of their energy costs at home.”

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB, said: “We are very pleased to be able to provide this guide for employers. People with smart meters are already saving energy. Our research shows that 8 in 10 people with smart meters have changed the way they do things at home to use less energy.

“The resources available in this guide are a great opportunity for employers to start discussions with employees around energy and smart meters – helping to spark behaviour change both at home and in the workplace. The guide outlines a series of opportunities to engage with the campaign, from sharing information in newsletters, through to providing your employees with the option to work from home and get a smart meter installed.”

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the voice of the smart meter rollout. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national rollout and how to use their new meters to get their gas and electricity under control. Our national campaign is reaching households and microbusinesses in England, Scotland and Wales.

About smart meters and the rollout

Smart meters replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They enable accurate bills, near real time information on energy use in pounds and pence, and greater control over the way we buy and use energy. The smart meter rollout is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure.

Almost 7 million smart meters have already been installed in homes and microbusinesses and every household in England, Scotland and Wales will be offered one at no additional cost. Contact your energy supplier today about installing your smart meter.
