THE HIDDEN POWER OF THE GREAT BRITISH WEATHER

We’ve worked with Chris Packham to raise awareness of the power of our Great British weather, and the role it can play in our fight against climate change. You might know wind and solar power are sustainable and renewable, so we need to harness that energy. Doing this could truly benefit the environment. But what do smart meters have to do with all this?

How can we fight climate change with renewable energy?

Are you worried about climate change? You’re not alone. According to our research, 76% of us are concerned about the impact climate change is having on our world. But what can we do about it?

Increasing our use of renewable energy is key in this fight. Renewable energy comes from sources that are constantly and naturally ‘renewed’, such as wind power or solar energy. The goal is for renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels, like coal and gas which contribute to climate change.

How can smart meters help us use more renewable energy?

A smart energy system needs to manage the supply of energy when usage is higher. For example, in the evening as people cook dinner or watch TV. During these periods, the energy system can’t rely purely on renewables, so power stations are used.

To prevent this, customers could use their smart meter and smart tariffs to reduce their energy usage at peak periods, when electricity is most expensive. This will help the energy system reduce our reliance on additional power stations, because they won’t need to produce as much extra energy at these peak times.

The Weather Energy Report

The Weather Energy Report was compiled by Dr Tim Forman of the University of Cambridge. It reveals that some areas in Britain are generating more renewable energy from the British weather than others:

Southwest England

Southwest England is generating the most solar power per km2.

Plymouth

Plymouth is the Britain’s sunniest city with the potential to generate more solar power than any other city across the country.

Scotland

Scotland is home to the nation’s biggest onshore wind farms and top source of tidal power.

Wales

Wales delivers the most hydro power from a single location – the Llyn Brianne Dam.

Hornsea

Hornsea off the North Yorkshire coast takes the crown as producing the most off-shore wind energy in Britain.
