Smart Energy GB response to E.ON’s launch of Smart Pay As You Go pilot

Claire Maugham, Director of Policy and Communications at Smart Energy GB, the national consumer campaign for the smart meter roll-out, said:

“The smart meters being offered to every home can be used in either credit or pay-as-you-go mode, which means energy suppliers like E.ON have a new opportunity to innovate. Choosing pay-as-you-go will no longer mean the inconvenience of having to go to the shop, and the higher prices of around £80 a year that prepay customers currently experience.  There’ll also be more ways to top up credit, such as over the phone, via an app or online.

“Smart pay-as-you-go will transform the experience for those using prepayment meters, and will open up a new way of paying for everyone. Smart Energy GB research shows that nearly half (48 per cent) of the British population are interested in paying for their gas and electricity in this way – smart meters will bring a pay-as-you-go revolution in energy, just as we’ve seen in mobile phones.”

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the not-for-profit campaign for the national smart meter roll-out. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national roll-out and how to use their new meters to get their gas and electricity under control. Our national campaign has already begun and will reach all households and microbusinesses in England, Scotland and Wales.

About smart meters and the roll-out

Smart meters will replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They will provide consumers with accurate bills, near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, and greater control over their gas and electricity. The smart meter roll-out is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure. Between now and 2020, every home and small business across England, Scotland and Wales will be offered a smart meter by their energy supplier at no extra cost. About 1.4 million smart meters have already been installed. Find out how you can get a smart meter from your energy supplier.
