Automatic meter readings

Not only do smart meters automatically send your energy readings to your supplier, but the readings are also sent directly and securely. Here are the facts...

Smart meters send automatic meter readings to your supplier

With traditional energy meters, it's up to you to send your readings. Some need to get under the stairs or go outside in the rain to get their meter readings. But with a smart meter, those energy readings are sent automatically. You can choose to share half-hourly, daily, or in some cases, monthly meter readings automatically.

Automatic meter readings are safe

Your energy readings are sent through a secure network operated by the DCC. They turn your meter readings into a code that your energy supplier must unlock. On top of that, your energy supplier will only know how much energy you’ve used, not how you've used it.

This is because smart meters only measure household energy use. They don't not know when your individual appliances are turned on or off. It’s up to you how much of your energy use data you share with your supplier. The more information you share, the more they will be able to help you better understand and manage your use. But this is always your choice.

So those secret 9 pm hot chocolates can remain a secret.
