Your smart meter won’t increase how much your energy costs

In fact, a smart meter could help you reduce your bills by making you aware of your energy use. If you have a smart meter, you won’t pay more for your energy than if you had a traditional meter.

Smart meters don't increase how much your energy costs

The unit rate you pay for your energy won’t change because you get a smart meter installed, unless you change your energy tariff at the same time.

Smart meters measure your energy use, just like traditional meters. The only thing that changes when you get a smart meter is how you and your energy supplier get information about your energy use.

If you're on a variable tariff, the unit rate you pay for energy may change at points in the year, because of the price cap. This will be true whether you have a smart meter or a traditional meter.

Smart meters can actually help you save money

In fact, they can help reduce bills by making you aware of your energy use. This is because having a smart meter can help you take action to save money.

Smart meters come with an in-home-display (IHD), which shows how much energy you're using in near real-time. The IHD keeps you informed of how much energy you’re using, so you can use it to help you save energy, and reduce your energy bills.
