Smart meter consumer protections

With a smart meter, there are strict rules put in place to protect your energy supply. This page can help you understand how you're protected and what to do if you're worried about being disconnected.

Is it easier for my energy supplier to cut my power with a smart meter?

You’re protected by tough regulations against your energy supplier switching off your gas or electricity supply.

This protection is the same as with traditional meters. There are strict rules set by Ofgem about disconnection. Switching off someone’s energy supply is a last resort and the end of a long process for suppliers.

What can I do if I think I might get disconnected?

The first thing you should do is contact your energy supplier. If you have a smart meter in your home, your supplier must do the following before they could potentially disconnect your supply:

  • contact you to discuss options for repaying your debt. This could mean setting up a repayment plan
  • visit your home to make sure being disconnected won't affect your personal situation. For example, if you’re disabled or elderly.

If they don’t do this and they try to disconnect you and you would like help, the government has asked Citizens Advice to watch over and help on issues relating to your energy supplier's service.

Citizens Advice may be able to help you sort out the issue.

They can be contacted on their helpline at 0808 223 1133 or online at their consumer service website.

No need to worry with a smart meter

With all of these protections in place, you can request a smart meter knowing that your home will be just as safe as it was with a traditional meter...
