ABOUT SMART ENERGY GB
Smart Energy GB is a government backed organisation tasked with informing Great Britain about the benefits of the smart meter rollout. Our national campaign is tasked with helping everyone in England, Scotland and Wales understand smart meters, the national rollout and how to use their new meters to be cleaner and greener with their energy use.
OUR ROLE IN THE UPGRADE
While our job is to spread the message to everyone, we have a particular duty to make sure low-income, vulnerable and prepay customers benefit from smart meters.
We aim to:
- grow consumer awareness and understanding
- build consumer confidence in smart meters
- assist more vulnerable consumers to realise the benefits of smart meters
- reach out to support small businesses, where cost-effective

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENTS
As the voice of the smart meter rollout, we believe it is vital to consider our environmental impact as an organisation. We have a robust environmental management system which reflects our commitment to maximise our environmental sustainability and minimise our carbon footprint.
Environmental achievements
Continuing our drive for reducing our environmental impact, we are delighted to have had our carbon footprint measured by the Carbon Trust, with a 19 per cent reduction on the previous year. This reduction is the equivalent of an average passenger car driving around the circumference of the Earth over 5 times! In 2019, we recycled 92 per cent of our waste, which is a 10 per cent improvement from when our records started in 2016. We are proud that none of our waste goes to landfill and instead is safely processed to provide heating and hot water to over 100,000 UK homes.
Ethical Products
One of our objectives is to regularly review products and supplies used in our offices to ensure that our environmental impact is minimised. In 2019, we made numerous changes for the better. Our hand soaps are now all-natural, bee-friendly and are provided by a disability-positive employer. Our pens are made out of recycled plastic bottles. Our cleaning products have started to be changed over to more eco-friendly hand towels as well as offering ethical sanitary products.
Staff Engagement
Throughout 2019, we held a number of staff engagement sessions to educate and inspire our team to reduce their individual carbon footprint both at work and home. A highlight was that we had a member of Feedback Global attend to run a session on fighting food waste. We discussed how to reduce food waste at home as well as the effects of food waste has on the planet. We also engaged staff through our annual environmental lunch and learn where we shared our progress as an organisation and shared tip on how to reduce their own carbon footprint.
