About Smart Energy GB
Smart Energy GB is the voice of the smart meter rollout. We're independent of government, we're not an energy supplier and we don't fit smart meters. We're here to make sure everyone in Great Britain understands smart meters, the rollout and how to use their meters to get their gas and electricity under control.
Getting everyone on board
We want to give everyone the enthusiasm and confidence to say "yes" to smart meters. We’ll make sure everyone knows how they can use their smart meter and understands the benefits.
Why we're doing this
We want customers to have accurate energy bills. Smart meters bring how we pay for energy into line with how we pay for other things, like supermarket shopping. We also think smart meters have the power to help Great Britain build a reliable, secure energy supply.
Our role in the upgrade
While our job is to spread the message to everyone, we have a particular duty to make sure low-income, vulnerable and prepay customers benefit from smart meters.
Overall, we aim to:
- grow consumer awareness and understanding
- build consumer confidence in smart meters
- assist more vulnerable consumers to realise the benefits of smart meters
- reach out to support small businesses, where cost-effective
What is the national smart meter rollout?
By the end of 2020, around 53 million smart meters will be fitted in more than 30 million premises (households and businesses) across Wales, Scotland and England. The programme is already underway. We're in the first stages and nearly five million smart meters have already been installed across Great Britain. This is the biggest national infrastructure project in our lifetimes and it will enable a more energy efficient system for Great Britain.
