Smart meters and electric vehicles
Smart meters enable all sorts of new energy-saving technologies and are particularly useful for people with electric vehicles (EVs). Owners can now see what it’s costing them to charge their vehicle. And with more car owners switching to EVs, it’s exciting to see how smart meters are enabling a smarter future.
My name is Iain McIntyre, I live in Edinburgh. I got my electric car, my EV, on the 7th of March, this year. I would recommend that someone who's got an electric vehicle has a smart meter because it is important you understand quite how much it's costing.
I'm a bit of a gadget fan so the opportunity to see on a display in the home what the car's charging, what the kettle's charging and so on, and the pounds and pence of that is fun!
It's been absolutely fantastic to have a smart meter. I'm loving having an electric vehicle and I feel like I'm part of a smart future.
Smart meters and carers

You’re like: “Dealt with, fine, okay, what do you want to do today?”
Can my smart meter help me save money?
Yes. Smart meters can help us to identify situations where we're using a lot of energy and might want to make changes to this. If you use the information shown on your smart meter in-home display to reduce your energy use, you could reduce your energy costs. Smart meters also mean accurate bills as they bring an end to estimates, so you can be confident that you're only paying for what you've actually used.
What's the link between smart meters and clean air?
From the moment your smart meter is installed, you are helping to reduce our carbon emissions as a nation. Smart meters help to create a smart energy system. With a truly smart energy system we can better match supply with demand, and integrate more renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the system. These forms of generating energy create less air pollution and emit significantly less CO2 into the atmosphere.
