WHAT IS AN ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME DISPLAY?

Smart meters come with an in-home display (IHD), which shows how much energy you have used at a glance, and automatically sends your meter readings to your energy supplier.

An ‘accessible’ in-home display with additional features has been developed in partnership with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and includes features such as large buttons and text-to-speech functionality.

WHY HAS AN ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME DISPLAY BEEN DEVELOPED?

The accessible in-home display has been developed to allow more customers, including those who are blind or partially sighted, to access the benefits of smart metering, such as helping consumers understand and reduce their energy consumption and costs.

Depending on the severity of the condition, some people may find that the accessible in-home display meets their needs better than a regular in-home display.

IS THE ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME-DISPLAY AVAILABLE TO ALL CUSTOMERS?

At the moment energy suppliers are gauging demand for accessible in-home display’s so they are not available with every supplier, and they are only being offered to selected customers.

If you want one it is important to make your energy supplier aware of this.

WHAT DOES AN ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME DISPLAY LOOK LIKE?

An accessible in-home display could look like this, but will vary depending on your supplier.

WHAT FEATURES DOES AN ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME DISPLAY HAVE?

An accessible in-home display has all the features of a regular smart meter in-home display, with the addition of accessibility features which could include:

  • Text-to-speech function for screen navigation
  • Adjustable volume for the text-to-speech function
  • Coloured LEDs which indicate electricity usage
  • LED push button to replay speech
  • Large typeface
  • TFT screen with a high contrast colour scheme optimised for visual impairment and colour blindness

DOES THE ACCESSIBLE IN-HOME DISPLAY COST ANYTHING?

The accessible in-home display is being offered at no extra cost to selected customers, but they are not yet available with every supplier.

FAQS

How do smart meters work?

Your smart meter measures how much gas and electricity you use and securely shares this directly with your energy supplier at least once a month and your portable in-home display in near real time. You won't have to take any meter readings manually - your smart meter will send automatic readings to your energy supplier via the secure smart data network which is solely for smart meters. This works in a similar way as other wireless systems but does not use the internet.

Do I need a broadband connection in my home to have a smart meter?

No. Smart meters use an entirely separate, bespoke wireless system. You don't need Wi-Fi in your home for it to work and it won't use your Wi-Fi if you have it. Your smart meter and in-home display communicate via a secure national network which is solely for smart meters. This works in the same way as other wireless systems like car remote keys or TVs, using radio waves.
