How Britain benefits
If the whole nation got a smart meter, we could save the same amount of energy as it takes to power every household in Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle for a year.
Good for everyone
Most of us haven’t got a clue how much energy we use and a third of us don’t understand our energy bills. Smart meters are designed to give back control to consumers and rebalance the energy market.
Good for the economy
Smart meters are part of the government’s plans to bring our national energy system up to date. They have a vital part to play in helping to move Britain towards a lower carbon economy and a secure energy supply.
Is everyone in Great Britain getting a smart meter?
Everyone in England, Wales and Scotland is entitled to a smart meter if they want one and every energy supplier has to offer its customers a smart meter by 2020.
Have other countries already got smart meters?
The United States, Canada, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands are among the countries already benefiting from smart meters and most other EU countries are currently rolling them out.
