Who can get a smart meter?
Every household in Britain can get a smart meter as part of the national rollout. Your energy supplier will install them in your home at no extra cost. If you’re the account holder who pays the energy bills, you are automatically entitled to one.
Here’s what you need to know if you’re:
Smart meters and tenants
If you’re the account holder and you pay the bills, you’re entitled to ask your energy supplier for a smart meter. They can remove the hassle of working out how much you owe when you move out. They’ll also help when dividing bills between flatmates.
With smart meters, you always know what energy you’re using and what it’s costing.
Discussing smart meters with your landlord
If you pay the bills, you don’t need to ask your landlord’s permission to get a smart meter fitted but we would recommend letting your landlord know. It might be worth pointing out that smart meters are part of a national rollout or telling them about the benefits.
To make this as easy as possible we've created an email that you can send straight to your landlord, just insert your names and send!
I rent. Can I still get a smart meter?
Yes. If you pay your gas and/or electricity bills and they're addressed to you rather than your landlord, you don't need your landlord's permission to get a smart meter. However, we do recommend that you inform them first so that they are aware you’re planning to get one. If your landlord pays the bills, you should ask them to contact your supplier to arrange a smart meter installation for you.
What if I have a prepay meter?
Smart meters will make prepay as easy as pay-as-you-go on your mobile. You will have the ability to switch easily between prepay and credit modes, with no need to change your existing meter. If you choose smart prepay, you should be able to:
- conveniently see how much credit you have left on your in-home display, without having to manually read or access the meter
- top up when and where you want to - online, with an app, on the telephone, or via text message
- top up in person at your local store/outlet, without any need to put a key or card back into a meter. Payments will automatically be added to your account. You will always be able to top up with cash
- pay the same rates as everyone else - smart meters will remove the need for prepay to be more expensive than other tariffs
