How are people in Britain taking part in and benefitting from consumer-led flexibility?
Hear from households
Meet Peter
Peter is a retired prison officer and lives with his wife and adult son in a mid-terrace house in Giffnock, Glasgow. Peter had a smart meter installed last year after being told by his supplier that his Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meter needed to be replaced. Since getting a smart meter, he’s started partaking in flexible energy reward schemes.
On getting his RTS meter replaced with a smart meter, Peter said:
“Before this happened, I wasn’t in a rush to get a smart meter, and I wasn’t even sure that we would be able to have one. Now that it’s been installed, I’ve found that I actually really like it. It does everything for me, and that’s the whole point of it. It takes all my meter readings automatically, and I can monitor my energy usage more easily, via an app on my phone. We’re very energy conscious, so that has been particularly useful.
“Having a smart meter has saved me some money too, by enabling me to start taking part in my supplier’s flexible energy use reward scheme. It’s fairly easy for me to shift my energy use to different times, and in doing so I’ve already shaved money off my bill.”

Meet Gerald and Sarah
Gerald and Sarah live in a semi-detached house in Ebbw Vale, South Wales, with their young daughter. They invested in a variety of low-carbon technologies, including a heat pump, solar panels and an EV charger, which enables them to engage in consumer-led flexibility more easily.
On having a smart meter after being initially hesitant about getting one installed, Gerald said:
“The smart meter was something that was installed because I wanted to access different tariffs and have more smart tech at home. Sarah was really resistant to the smart meter and technology in general, so everything was done in stages. After the smart meter, we started with the solar panels and battery, as well as removing the gas hob. The next stage for us is getting an electric car, which we’re really looking forward to. As soon as we get offered a more beneficial tariff, we’ll be getting one.
“Our bills have dropped from £3000 to just over £1000 since getting the smart meter and solar panels, which we’re really pleased with. The smart meter was the starting point of this journey for us. We’re over 10 years into smart meters being installed, and without them you can’t get the benefits of smart technology.”
