We want our loved ones to live in a greener, cleaner world. But the problem of climate change is only getting more worrying – in fact, three-quarters of us are worried about climate change and the impact it could have on our children's future. One thing is for sure: things need to change to make sure future generations can enjoy our planet.
We need to work together to make changes to prevent more devastating climate change. One way we can help prevent climate change is by using more renewable energy sources, to replace fossil fuels, like coal and gas, which will eventually run out.
Smart meters are helping to achieve this. They’re helping to modernise our energy system, so in the future it can better support the things we want from it, like using more renewable energy. So, you can feel confident that your loved ones will live in a greener future.
How will smart meters help Britain use more renewable energy?
A smart energy system needs to manage the supply of energy when more people are using energy, for example, in the evening as we cook dinner and watch TV. During these busier times, the energy system can’t rely purely on renewable energy, so power stations are used.
To prevent this, we could use smart meters and smart time of use tariffs to reduce our energy usage at peak periods, when electricity is most expensive. This will help the energy system reduce our reliance on additional power stations, because they won’t need to produce as much extra energy at these peak times. Helping us make the most of renewable energy, such as solar or wind energy – great!
We’re creating a greener future together
Did you know, 50% of existing meters have now been replaced with a smart meter? But without the whole of Britain getting one installed, we can’t benefit from a truly flexible energy system, and use more renewables.*

Making small changes for our loved ones
Just like recycling your single use plastics, or eating less meat, getting a smart meter in your home is a small step for individual households, but it will add up to big things for the future of Britain. We all need to make small changes to our energy usage habits to combat climate change for future generations.
Change the way you use energy
Once you have your smart meter, you’ll start to see your energy differently. They show the energy you’re using in pounds and pence, in near real time, so you can be more in control of what you’re using, when.
