Using your smart meter in-home display
Congratulations, you have a smart meter installed! You no longer need to rely on estimated billing, or submit meter readings manually – brilliant. And during the installation, you would have been offered a smart meter in-home display to help you monitor your energy usage. How can that help? We’ll let the in-home display explain:
Einstein: Garry! You know how your smart meter helps you manage your household budgets. Showing how much energy you are using and how much it's costing you. Which could help you make changes to save.
Take a sec, to energy check!
Hi smart meter owner, it’s me – your in-home display!
Did you know, your smart meter measures your energy usage then wirelessly sends the information to your supplier?
And to me too! Check my display to see your energy usage and I’ll help you get the most of the energy in your home.
I can make it easier for you to stay in control of your energy costs by helping you set goals and budgets.
But that isn't all! I can also show you the impact of your positive behaviour changes, like turning off your devices on standby, in near-real time.
Just make sure you keep me somewhere you'll see me often, and close to the smart meter.
- Wash clothes at a lower temperature
- Turn your devices off standby
- Don't overload your fridge and freezer, it increases the energy they use
- Cook some meals in the microwave, it's more efficient than an oven
- Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need
Stay informed about how much energy your household is using by checking me regularly.
And remember... 'Take a sec to energy check!'.
Your in-home display
So, what information does the in-home display provide?
Your in-home display is a portable device which you can place inside your house. This will show you:
- The energy you use in kWh and in pounds and pence
- Near-real time information on the energy you use, so you can see what you’ve spent at a glance
- What you've spent over time, so you can track when spending is higher than usual
How can that help you keep on top of the energy you use?
No more shock bills
Knowing what you're spending in near-real time on your in-home display means fewer surprises when your bill comes through.
Know what you're spending
Having a much clearer picture of how much you've spent at any given time means you can plan your spending habits accordingly.
Budgeting made easier
Some in-home displays even allow you to set a daily budget, while others would require you to use the information displayed to manually calculate your daily budget.
Reduce your energy use
You can identify when you're using more (or less) energy and adjust your behaviour accordingly. For example, turning off appliances to find out which is using the most energy.
Prepay customers can monitor credit
Use your in-home display to easily keep track of your energy credit. So, you can keep an eye on your spending as you go.
Sarah: a case study
Sarah lives in a rented house with her two children. She has a prepay smart meter, and has used her in-home display to get more control over her energy use.
“I think I've managed to save about £20 a month because I've been more conscious of what I'm using and what things cost.”
My name is Sarah, I live in Chelmsford with my two boys, in a three bedroom house. I've had my smart meter for three years now.
Since having the smart meter I feel like I’ve got a lot more control over how much I spend, I know when I’m running low on gas, low on electric, and know when we need to top up.
Because it’s turned a little bit chilly lately, I’ve decided to top the gas up more than normal, so I’ve noticed my spend on the gas has gone up slightly more than it would have maybe in the summer months.
Because I know how much my heating is costing me, I can really stay on top of what I’m spending.
Since having a smart meter I think I've saved the family about £20 per month by constantly checking, making sure I know what's on, what's not, telling my son to turn the lights off, to turn the TV off before he goes to bed, game consoles, and that has turned into us saving money as a family, by just being more conscientious of what we’re doing.
I would absolutely recommend a smart meter to everybody. They're brilliant!
Can't find your in-home display?
There are a few reasons your in-home display could be missing. Whether you moved into a home without one, or you didn't want one at the time of the installation, you'll need to speak to your energy supplier to find out your options.
The good news? This wouldn’t involve replacing the meters, only the in-home display that would then be paired with the existing smart meter.
